AI Communication Access Coalition
Why it matters
AI technologies affecting communication access are developing rapidly. They include tools that translate sign language, generate captions, produce synthetic speech, and interpret language at scale. These technologies offer real possibilities. They also carry real risks when accessibility is not considered from the start.
The AI Communication Access Coalition (AI-CAC) creates a space for these questions to be examined collaboratively, before systems are deployed rather than after.
- How should the accuracy of AI-generated captions or sign language be evaluated?
- When is AI appropriate for communication access, and when is a qualified human professional necessary?
- How should privacy and sensitive communication data be protected?
- How can developers meaningfully involve the communities who will use and be affected by these technologies?
Areas of Focus
Coalition members participate in focused committees developing voluntary best practices for communication accessibility. As technology evolves, additional committees may be established to address new areas.
SIGN LANGUAGE + AI
Generation, recognition, comprehension, and translation of sign languages.
Speech to Text + Captioning
AI-generated captions, transcripts, and text-based communication access.
AI-Generated Speech
Technologies that generate or reproduce spoken communication.
Machine Learning + LLMs
How ML systems interact with communication, language, and disability.
Ethics
Accuracy, transparency, privacy, appropriate use, and human oversight.
Emerging Tech
Explores emerging AI technologies and their potential impact on communication access
Our Approach
AI-CAC does not create government-mandated protocols or regulatory requirements. The coalition works to ensure accessibility is considered throughout AI design and development through collaboration, not compliance.
- Develop and share voluntary accessibility goals and best practices Encourage accessibility throughout AI design and development
- Identify emerging accessibility, ethical, and implementation concerns
- Promote meaningful involvement from affected communities
- Create opportunities for collaboration across technology, research, policy, and community
- Help organizations make informed decisions about AI communication technologies
Our goal is to help ensure that innovation expands communication access rather than creating new barriers.
The Role of Deaf Equality
Deaf Equality convenes and facilitates AI-CAC as part of our broader work toward equality for Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened communities.
Our team brings experience in disability rights, policy, technology, advocacy, and accessibility to conversations about emerging technologies and their real-world impact. We also provide information, resources, and consultation to organizations seeking to better understand communication accessibility and the responsible use of emerging technologies.
